Growing up, I didn’t have much in the way of “positively impactful” male role models. I didn’t get to spend much time with my maternal grandfather (Papa) – who was a great man – as far as I can remember (he passed when I was 13). And when I did (summers in Colorado), it was fun and games. He never truly taught me anything, I just relished being far, far away from my abusive father.
I’ve thought long and hard about this prompt, for many days, since I first encountered it. Honestly?! My life has been A Series of Unfortunate Events. My father made my life a living hell. I often wonder how I survived, but then I remember that children are resilient. I was resilient. My resilience came in the form of “media” in general. I escaped in books, music, TV, and movies. I found solace in Piers Anthony and Beethoven, amongst many others.
After much thought, I realized that… if there were any man that positively impacted my life, that would be Jim Carrey. I absolutely adored his movies when I was growing up. I hardly had any reason to laugh or enjoy life, so I watched Jim and found reasons through him. On the hardest of days, his humor and comedy helped me survive.
And that’s it.
